Based on abundant medicinal plant resources of the Wuling mountainous region in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture and guided by the industrialization policy of national and local governments, the company has adopted the industrialization business mode of “University + Company + Base + Farmers” and taken a modern Chinese medicine industrialization development road of “Integrating production, teaching and research, Building a business circle of trade, industry and farming” since its establishment. In the poverty-reduction development concept of market-oriented and technology-based, the objective of constantly improving local people’s wellbeing, the company has built poverty-reduction plantation bases in over a decade of villages in Shidi Town, Yangfeng Town and Qingping Town after years of efforts. In 2004, the plant areas of artemisiae annuae and taxus mairei respectively reached 1,500mu and 500mu. In 2005, the plant area of polygonum cuspidatum reached 2,300mu. In 2007, the plant area of taxus chinensis var mairei reached 5,000mu and that of huperzia serrata reached 5,000mu from 2009 to 2010. Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIMM), founded in 1932 and formerly known as the Institute of Materia Medica of Peking Academy of Sciences, is the only research institution of comprehensive medicaments for Chinese Academy of Sciences.
